What Is Unicorn Coaching, and Why You Need It — No Matter How Fast You Are

Let's get one thing out of the way first: Unicorn Coaching has nothing to do with your finish time.
We know, we know — the name sounds like it belongs to some mythical, unattainable, sparkly thing that only the fastest pros get to touch. But that's exactly the misconception we want to bust today. Unicorn Coaching isn't a speed tier. It's not a reward for hitting a Kona slot or running a sub-3 marathon. It's a relationship tier — and it's built for the athlete who is ready to go all in, no matter what "all in" looks like for them.
So what actually is Unicorn Coaching?
At TMT, we believe coaching isn't one-size-fits-all, which is why we built Podium, Champion, and Unicorn — three very different ways to work with us, depending on how much access, depth, and partnership you're looking for.
Unicorn Coaching sits at the very top. It is the most one-to-one endurance coaching experience we offer, period. Where Champion coaching gives you a highly personalized plan and monthly check-ins, Unicorn coaching means your coach is in the trenches with you — daily. Biweekly calls (or in-person sessions, when we can make it happen), unlimited text/email/phone access, same-day adjustments when life throws a curveball, video analysis, race-day strategy calls, and a coach who is reviewing your data up to the minute, tweaking your program based not just on your training, but on your achievements and setbacks, your travel schedule, your bad week at work, your kid's soccer tournament — your actual life.
It's not a training plan with a coach attached. It's a coach with a training plan attached.
"But I'm not fast. Why would I need THIS level of coaching?"
This is the question we hear the most, and it's the reason we wanted to write this post.
Unicorn Coaching was never designed to be a status symbol for elites. It was designed for the athlete — any athlete — who has decided that this sport, this goal, this season, deserves their full mission and someone showing up for it with them every single day.
Maybe you're training for your first Ironman and the unknowns feel enormous. Maybe you're a working parent trying to fit 15 hours of training into a life that already has zero white space, and you need a coach who can pivot your Tuesday intervals to Thursday without you having to ask twice. Maybe you're coming back from injury and every session needs a second set of eyes. Maybe you're chasing a Boston qualifier, a Kona slot, or simply the version of yourself who finishes what she started — and you know that the difference between almost and actually is having someone fully, daily, in your corner.
None of that has anything to do with your pace per mile. It has everything to do with how much support your goal — and your life — need right now.
That's the mindful part of being a mindful triathlete: knowing yourself well enough to ask for what you actually need, rather than what you think you're "allowed" to need.
Why Unicorn Coaching is only offered by our Master Coaches
Here's the part that makes Unicorn Coaching genuinely rare, and it's not a marketing gimmick — it's math and it's mission.
Unicorn Coaching only works if your coach has the bandwidth, the experience, and the pattern-recognition to hold that level of daily, high-touch responsibility for a small handful of athletes at a time. That's why these spots are limited to our Master Coaches — Meg, Joaquin, and Thomas.

Coach Meg built TMT from the ground up and has spent over 15 years coaching athletes through exactly the chaos Unicorn athletes are usually navigating — full-time careers, parenting, divorce, comebacks, world championship dreams. She's a multiple Ironman World Championship qualifier who has coached athletes to qualify at 70.3 and full distance Worlds, and she knows what it takes to hold someone accountable to a big goal while still helping them live an actual life.

Coach Joaquin is a professional triathlete with 12 years of coaching experience and an engineering degree that shows up in how precisely he reads your data. He's guided athletes to Kona, to Boston, to multiple 70.3 World Championships — in English or Spanish — and brings a racer's instinct for what a body needs the week before it matters most.

Coach Thomas raced his way to a pro card at 70.3 Augusta and pairs that with a kinesiology background and physical therapy training, which means your Unicorn plan isn't just building you for race day — it's building an athlete who's still healthy and capable long after the finish line.
The through-line with all three: they've lived the extremes of this sport and coached through them. That depth of experience is exactly what daily, unlimited-access coaching demands. Because the truth is, giving an athlete that much of yourself — your time, your attention, your read on their data every single day — only scales to a very small number of relationships. We would rather keep Unicorn Coaching rare and real than stretch it thin and let it become just another tier in name only.
The bottom line
You don't need to be fast to need a Unicorn. You need to be ready — ready to commit, ready to be fully seen by your coach, and ready to let someone walk every step of the mission with you, not just hand you a plan and check in once a month.
Unicorn Coaching spots are extremely limited, and they open up only when Meg, Joaquin, or Thomas has room to take on that level of partnership. If that sounds like the kind of support your season — or your life right now — actually calls for, reach out. Let's talk about whether Unicorn Coaching is your next step.
Are you all in?
